Kiko is a 15 pound, neutered male Shih Tzu, approximately 5 years old. He has a few ‘special needs’ so we are looking for an adopter that has experience with his breed and temperament.
Kiko is very sweet and loyal and loves all people. He’s confident it public places and loves going for car rides. He might bark at other dogs but we have worked on this and he is improving. He will need continued training to maintain these improvements.
He is selfish, however, with other dogs when it comes to squeaky toys and other items that he cherishes. For that reason, we are not going to place him in a home with other dogs.
Kiko was in and out of an animal shelter 6 times because his previous owner had medical issues and did not have someone that could take care of him while they were hospitalized. During his stays at the shelter, Kiko came to the conclusion that he needed to stand up and fight to defend himself and his resources.
Kiko is heatlhy except for the tendency to create crystals in his urine which, if left untreated, will lead to bladder/kidney stones and urinary tract infections. We keep his urinary tract healthy with a simple prescription diet designed for dogs with this tendency. He is currently eating a high-quality prescription diet for dogs with urinary issues from a company called Just Food For Dogs. This food is human quality food specially designed for dogs. It is an expensive food but the benefit of it is that he likes it and it is keeping him healthy.
He doesn’t like being groomed or handled in that way so he will snap at anyone that tries to do those things. He will need a muzzle at the vet and the groomer.
He would do best if placed in a home with someone that is familiar with dogs and not afraid of them. He will also need a someone that can afford his dog food and grooming expenses.
He can be feisty and he needs someone who can interpret his behavior for what it is and not be afraid of him. He truly can be sweet and cuddly and fun to be with. He just needs the right home where he feels safe and understood.
As a housebroken and well-mannered indoor companion, Kiko is ready to bring joy and companionship to his forever home. While he’d love a house with a yard, he’s not suited for apartment or condo living.
Kiko might be the perfect fit if you’re looking for a loyal friend with whom to share your life. With his loving personality and adaptable nature, he’s sure to steal your heart. No one will ever love you more than Kiko!
